What students did:

Students had two projects they were working on this week in ELA. One project was an informational piece about the history of Lacrosse in Canada. This was directly linked to our Phys-Ed residency with ELEV8 Lacrosse. Students learned about the Indigenous roots of Lacrosse through their research. They took time to learn how it has changed and how it is played today. 

Students also listened to a story called "Florette". In this story, a girl moves and struggles with not being able to bring her favourite part of her old home - her garden - with her. Florette learns to love her new home and demonstrates resilience through change. Students noted insightful connections and explanations for how this book is a metaphor for their upcoming transition to Nickle School. Students shared their thoughts about the transition through a Four Directions (North, South, East, West) thinking prompt: What are you Nervous about? What Strategies will you use to cope? What Excites you about Nickle School? What are you Wondering about? 

Students also wrote a letter to their grade 6 teacher this week. In their letters they shared their interests, about their family, their strengths in school and their areas for growth. They shared strategies that are effective for them and tools that help them learn. Their letters will be passed on to their grade 6 teachers. 

On Thursday, June 19th, we celebrated National Indigenous People's Day by inviting Jay Genaille to our school. Jay is a professional Hoop Dancer. His cultural background is Cree, Salteaux, and Anishnaabe. Jay was an inspiration to our students. He shared his incredible story and his amazing hoop dancing talent. We were all amazed by his skills and his passion.
