Social Studies

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the people and the stories of Canada and their ways of life over time, and appreciate the diversity of Canada’s heritage.

 What Did Students Do?

This week, students engaged in work connected to National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. Students learned about the purpose of Land Acknowledgements. We learned about the meaning of words such as acknowledge and reconciliation.

Students listened to and watched two different land acknowledgements. One had actions to accompany the words and the other one highlighted individuals from the Indigenous groups in Treaty 7. 

Students also had the opportunity to appreciate the land around our school. We took some time to journal in our learning grounds using our senses. Students also noted things they appreciated about our learning space and our outdoor environment. 

Later on in the week, students listened to stories related to Orange Shirt Day and Residential School - Shi shi etko and The Orange Shirt Story. After hearing the stories, students were invited to create artwork to represent what they want to remember about the significance of Phyllis Webstad's Orange Shirt story. They created a symbol and a message on their artwork.
